Learn how to Drive a Car with a Manual Transmission

Prepare your self

First you must know how to drive a car before learning how to operate a manual transmission.

You don’t have to worry about shifting and what your left foot is doing is confused enough, being uncomfortable behind the wheel no matter what transmission the car has makes it even worse.

The practice area, where you first drive should be flat, free of obstructions and obviously have no cars stand in it.

The car used to learn ,better to be small one, because it's easier.

You must Choose a car with a floor mounted stick shift, Don't learn on a car that has the shifter on the steering column, the Floor mounted stick shifts are easier to use.

Practice on a day with weather is good and the sky is clear

Take a Seat in the car

now you will set in the car, you will see Three pedals and a stick shift And a parking brake, arrange your setting chair to make sure you are sitting close enough to push the clutch, and the left pedal, to all the way to the floor.

Also the gear shift should be within an easy reach as well.

You must to take your time to be familiar with the shift pattern before you need to keep your eyes on the road.

Most off Japanese manual shift pattern has five forward speeds arranged in an H pattern, with 5th

A six speed would be similar except for the addition of the 6th gear directly below 5th.

Some European cars have reverse down or up to the left, with a shift locked out consisting of pulling up on the shift boot before being able to get into it.

Neutral is in the middle when you can wiggle the gearshift back and forth.

now lets go to the pedals , the gas and the brake, The gas for acceleration and the brake for stop the car or slow it down.

the clutch (far left) does is control the distance between two discs or "plates." One plate is connected to the engine, and has a big, flat surface. The other plate is connected to the transmission and is made of a material like fine sandpaper. The clutch pulls them apart when you press it in, and lets them touch each other when the pedal is up. So when you press in the clutch you separate the engine from the transmission. Since the pedal is not an on-off switch, you can control how quickly the two come together, letting one slip against the other for a bit, as you let the clutch pedal up, This "letting out the clutch" is the key to getting the car moving from a stop.

with the car still turned off, you will put your right foot on the brake pedal, and with your left, push the clutch to the floor, Do some Practice pressing it to the floor somewhat quickly, then letting it back up slowly to get used on it.

Check out the gearshift

Put your right foot on the brake, push in the clutch and try moving the stick shift through the pattern, one gear at a time until you get to fifth, then back down again. Now try to find reverse. It is often hard to find. Refere to the owner manual to know it surely.

Starting the Car

check to make sure the parking brake (lever just to the right of the driver's seat) is set and put the car into neutral by pushing down the clutch and putting the stick into neutral.

You will be able to move the gearshift back in forth through its whole horizontal movement while you are in neutral.

Now start the car and Push the clutch to the floor.

Once the car is started, let the clutch up slowly, just to make sure the car really isn't in gear, If at any point the car feels like it wants to move, push the clutch back to the floor: you are not in neutral. Shut down and start over.

no need to have your right foot on the brake lets release it .

Moving the car

the all important point in which most of the engine power goes from idling freely to transferring through the transmission and then to the wheels. This varies from car to car,
with Clutch to the floor, right foot on the gas; give the engine just a little extra gas - not much. Now slowly let the clutch come up. As you feel that catch point, the RPM will start to drop and the car will start to move forward a bit. Slowly give it more gas to keep the RPM constant as you let the clutch out, Give it enough gas to keep the RPM constant until the pedal is all the way out. Now push in the clutch and brake to a stop, Repeat it till that catch point starts to feel comfortable

The friction point can be felt with the car starts moving, and engine RPMs drop usually along with the noise of the engine. This is also the point that many beginners let the clutch out too quickly, resulting in the engine lugging and the car bucking. Don't worry, at this slow speed, no serious damage will occur to the car.

Well done you just did the biggest part of driving a manual, starting from a standing stop!

Practice this a few times until you can smoothly get the car moving without the car lugging, and until it takes no more than 2 to 3 seconds to smoothly take the car from dead stop to clutch all the way out.

Get speed up.…
Doing the same thing as you did before with your left foot on the clutch, when you start reaching the friction point, gently apply some gas will allow you to release the clutch more quickly until it is fully engaged.

The faster you apply the gas, the faster you can release the clutch.

Get speed up.…

To switch out from first gear to second to any higher gear, just Let out the clutch while increasing pressure on the gas pedal just like you did earlier, Practice this on a straight area .

Note: "take your foot off the gas when you push in the clutch"

You can let out the clutch very quickly in comparison to first gear, since the wheels are moving already.

what speed should you shift to the second?

It depends on the car, all car manuals give the recommended shift points, but in general each gear has a good range:

Basically you should probably not go over 4 rpm's
1st (0 to 20 km/h 0 to 15 mph ) Starting from a stop, creeping the car, parking

2nd (15 to 40 km/h 10 to 25 mph) Residential driving, parking lots

3rd (25 to 60 km/h 15 to 40 mph) Main streets

4th (50 to 90 km/h 30 to 55 mph) faster main streets, rural roads

5th (Over 80 km/h Over 50 mph) rural roads, freeway

First gear is the only to get you going.

in Facts it is very easy to start the car in second gear - although don't try this until you get a good handle on the whole process as it is tougher on the disk plates.

As for when to shift, most if not all car manuals give the recommended shift points. Most cars also have tachometers; Best practice is to ask the individual helping you or asking others who drive the particular type of car in person as to what works best with your particular car.

Parking Brake
it must be a habit that one needs to get used to is always to set the parking brake when parking, so lets make sure you set the parking brake first and let up on the brakes to make sure it is engaged fully, then leave the gearshift in reverse or first .

Slow your car and Downshifting
Downshifting is like up shifting, release the gas, press the clutch and move to a lower gear and get back on the gas as you let out the clutch.

Getting back on the gas quickly is important since downshifting and not touching the gas will slow the car down as the engine compression fights the turning of the wheels ,which is what you want while going down a hill but not when you need to pass somebody.

So If you are high in your current gear, then downshifting may spin the motor beyond its limit, and you might throw some belts or worse, throw a rod or valve which means it would be time for a major overhaul or engine replacement.

So Just let your foot off the gas and coast down to 20, or put your foot on the brake lightly with the clutch still all the way out.

if you want to go down to 10 , press in the clutch, use the brake pedal to slow to your preferred speed, move the shift lever to second, and let out the clutch as you match the engine speed with the gas pedal.

Stop the car
the best is to put the car in neutral and use the brakes to come to a complete stop or you can downshift and apply the brakes as well.

being alone off to the right and up, with reverse being to the farthest right and down.
